Who SEAI pays it to, in its words
SEAI, heat pump systems: "A €2,000 Boiler Scrappage grant where an oil or gas boiler, or an electric storage system, or solid fuel system is being removed. The grant is also paid Homeowners without central heating where a heat pump is being installed."
The home must also be old enough for the heat pump grant. SEAI's guide says homes built and lived in:
SEAI, homeowner application guide: "before 2021 for the Heat Pump System and;"
Replacing a heat pump that is already there gets neither the scrappage grant nor the radiator grant:
SEAI, heat pump systems: "This cohort will not be eligible to avail of the Fossil Fuel Boiler Scrappage grant (€2,000) or the Central Heating grant (€2,000)"
If your boiler has failed and you are fitting another one, the boiler replacement page sets out what you can still claim.
How much
- up to €10,500 for the heat pump;
- up to €2,000 for new radiators or underfloor pipes, where the design needs them;
- €2,000 for the boiler, heaters or solid fuel system that comes out.
SEAI, heat pump systems: "The maximum Heat Pump System grant on the Better Energy Homes Programme has been increased to €14,500"
The heating controls grant is not paid alongside it:
SEAI, heating controls: "The grant is not available if you are applying for, or have previously claimed, a heat pump system grant."
Amounts last checked 2026-10-03 on SEAI's heat pump grant page.
When it started, and open applications
SEAI dates it from the Government's announcement:
SEAI, heat pump systems: "Following the Government's announcement on Monday 29th Sept of the new €2,000 Boiler Scrappage Grant"
SEAI, individual energy grants: "New €2,000 boiler scrappage scheme, a battery grant and enhanced supports for households at risk of energy poverty among measures approved by Government."
SEAI, heat pump systems: "SEAI can confirm that eligible homeowners with an existing Heat Pump Grant application will receive the additional support."
SEAI, heat pump systems: "Where eligible, the additional €2,000 support will be applied automatically. No action is required from applicants."
Before you apply
SEAI, homeowner application guide: "You must have grant approval in place before you start work."
SEAI, heat pump systems: "Homes built before 2007: A Technical Assessment is required if you do not have a valid BER assessment or if your BER Assessment indicates your dwelling has a high heat loss."
SEAI, heat pump systems: "You do not need one if your valid BER says your Heat Loss Indicator is equal to or less than 2.3 W/(K.m2)."
How many homes are already under that line, by house type, age and county, from their BERs.
Oil and gas after the Budget
Budget 2027 cuts the carbon tax on home heating oil and gas to €48.50 a tonne, until 2030. Heating costs from January 2027 has what changes and when; what the carbon tax adds has the figures.
