Home energy grants for pensioners

There is no pensioner grant. There is something better.

SEAI have no scheme for pensioners as such. Your age does not qualify you for anything, and neither does a medical card.

What does qualify you is Fuel Allowance. Get that, and you meet the main condition for SEAI's free upgrades scheme — insulation, draught proofing and sometimes more, installed by SEAI's contractor, with no bill at the end.

Fuel Allowance from 66

From age 66 you can get Fuel Allowance on the means test alone. You do not have to be on any other welfare payment. That is the single most useful fact on this page, because plenty of people who would pass the means test have never applied.

Apply on MyWelfare.ie or on the paper form for over-66s. It is not backdated, so applying late in the season costs you weeks.

What Fuel Allowance unlocks

Four things must all be true for the free upgrades scheme: you own the home and live in it, it was built and lived in before 2006, you get a qualifying payment such as Fuel Allowance, and a surveyor finds work worth doing.

Then SEAI pick the measures, SEAI's contractor does them, and you pay nothing. Attic insulation, cavity or solid wall insulation, draught proofing, lagging jackets, low-energy bulbs, and heating controls or ventilation where the main work needs them.

If you have just started getting the payment, SEAI ask you to wait five or six weeks before applying.

Be ready for the wait

SEAI's own published figure is up to 24 months from applying to the work being finished. Apply anyway — the queue only moves in one direction — but do not plan your winter around it.

What stacks, and what does not

Since March 2026, homeowners on those same welfare payments can claim higher individual grants for attic and wall insulation while keeping their place in the free-upgrades queue. Applying does not cost you your position.

The catch is that these are ordinary grants: you pay the installer and SEAI pay you back afterwards. If finding the money up front is the problem, the free scheme is still your route and the answer is to wait.

A measure already grant-aided at your address cannot be claimed again. The one exception is walls: cavity can be followed later by internal or external insulation, and internal by external.

Other supports worth checking in the same week

• Living Alone Increase, €22 a week in 2026, if you live alone and get a State Pension. It is not automatic — you have to apply — and it is ignored in the Fuel Allowance means test, so it does not push you over the limit.
• Telephone Support Allowance, €2.50 a week, paid automatically to people who get both the Living Alone Increase and Fuel Allowance.
• Household Benefits Package helps with the electricity or gas bill. Useful, but be clear: it does not qualify you for the free upgrades scheme. SEAI say so directly.
• If you had work done before. Where SEAI surveyed your home under the free scheme on or after 1 July 2018, you are usually not eligible for more. Before that, it depends on what was done.
• If you sell within five years of free upgrades, tell SEAI; they may look for some of the value back.
